Britain’s Andy Murray is through to the third round of the French Open at Roland Garros but he had to overcame a significant injury scare before beating Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen.
The fourth seed, who has been battling a troublesome back injury since December, came from behind to seal a 1-6 6-4 6-1 6-2 win but in the first set, Murray struggled to serve or move around the court and called for the trainer three times and he eventually lost the set 1-6.
However, despite losing an early break in the second, Murray looked back to his normal self and he changed the momentum of the match at 4-2 down in the second set and he then dominated the rest of the encounter.
Murray admitted after the match that his his coaching team were advising him to withdraw at the end of the first set.
Murray told ITV: “It was tough. I was obviously struggling at lot particularly at the beginning of the match. I don’t know how I won to be honest.
“I think my back went into spasm. It was sore this morning when I got up and practised and it was sore 20 minutes after I finished practice.
“I couldn’t put weight on my left leg. I had it in practice a couple of times.
“The guys were telling me to stop after the first set, we talked about it briefly before the match and I just decided to play. Sometimes guys can get nervous and you feel better, and a combination helped me get through.”
Murray will now face Colombian Santiago Giraldo, who pulled off a shock to beat 25th seed Bernard Tomic in three sets.
In other news, Rafael Nadal easily outclassed his opponent, Denis Istomin in straight sets, winning 6-2 6-2 6-0. Champion Nadal has only lost one service game in the tournament so far and is still on for a record-breaking seventh French Open title.
Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga also booked his place in the third round with a victory over Cedrik-Marcel Stebe in four sets, 6-2 4-6 6-2 6-1.
In the women’s draw, both Petra Kvitova and Caroline Wozniacki are safely through to the third round after straight sets victories over Urszula Radwanska and Jarmila Gajdosova respectively.
