Seven percent of catholic priests have been accused of sexually abusing children between the years of 1950 to 2010.
The statistics were released when the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse heard that 4,444 alleged pedophilia incidents were reported to the church authorities at over 1,000 catholic churches across the country.
The average age of the victims were 10.5 for girls and 11.5 for boys.
Australia ordered the Royal Commission to investigate these allegations and the inquiry is now in its final place after 4 years of hearing.
Of the alleged 1,880 perpetrators, 90% of them were men.
Francis O’Sullivan, CEO of the Truth Justice and Healing council has said that:
“These numbers are shocking, they are tragic and they are indefensible, as Catholics we hang our heads in shame”.
