Serie A clubs Cagliari and Fiorentina will retire the number 13 shirt, the kit number worn by Davide Astori during his time at both clubs as a mark of respect.
The 31-year-old died suddenly in a hotel hours before Fiorentina’s clash with Udinese last Sunday.
Astori amassed an impressive 289 Serie A appearances over ten seasons, scoring seven goals.
“In honour of Davide Astori’s memory, @CagliariCalcio and #ACFFiorentina have decided to retire the No. 13 shirt. #DA13”, Fiorentina said on Twitter.
All of last Sunday’s Serie A games were postponed in Astori’s honour.
It is believed that the 31-year-old died due to a suspected cardiac arrest.
Italian legend Gianluigi Buffon posted a heartfelt message on Instagram in memory of his former international teammate.
Chelsea manager Antonio Conte also paid tribute. Conte coached Astori while he managed the Italian International team.
“He was a fantastic guy – a great player but especially a fantastic guy. I stay very close to his family in this moment because he was only 31. It’s very difficult to explain this situation”, said Conte.
