McIlroy was all smiles after winning the TOUR Championship in a three-way playoff with Ryan Moore and Kevin Chappell. The last three holes were when McIlroy came to his forte and began his march, first towards the leaders and then onto the championship itself in the four-hole playoff. Playing a final round of 64, 12 under par for the day saved his tournament by bringing the contest to a playoff.
McIlroy himself stated that “It was incredible. As I said at the start of the day, all I wanted to do was concentrate on winning the Tour Championship… I just needed to come out here and play a really good round of golf. I somehow was able to tie it up in regulation. I played with Ryan all day, who played phenomenally well. Big credit is due to him. He’s playing fantastic golf and has done over the past few months so he should be really proud of himself. I just wanted to go out here and play the way I’ve been playing. I’ve played really well this week and feel like my game’s coming together at the right time. Two wins in the last three feels pretty nice.” A typical interview with McIlroy, who heaped praise on his opponents.
McIlroy is certainly coming into form at the right time. With the Ryder Cup only a few days away, Team Europe’s captain (and fellow Northern Irishman) Darren Clarke will be delighted to see one of their main members win in such style.
The world No. 3 had a self-confidence and belief that were main factors in his resurgence. The $11.5 million jackpot will be welcomed by McIlroy, who finds himself 17th on Forbes’ list of the highest
It has been a truly memorable year for Northern Irish sports fans, with Carl Frampton becoming the First Northern Irish two weight world champion and the football team performing above expectations at Euro 2016; attention will now turn to the Ryder Cup, as Darren Clarke looks to guide Team Europe to another victory. With McIlroy in this form leading into it, few would bet against another win for team blue.
